Statement of Purpose

The purpose in learning & teaching the violin is to promote an enriching and satisfying experience in music for both student and teacher. The dynamic of the class promotes understanding, growth, sound musicianship, enthusiasm and capacity. The belief is that every child has special talents and the ability to learn a musical instrument through an environment that is nurturing and understanding the musical process.

Children and Teenagers

Introductory lessons

Your children possess knowledge of taking care of the instrument, the parts of the instrument, correct posture, holding the violin correct bow tension, and establishing proper bow hold. We will also teach reading in treble clef and playing melodies in simple time signatures.

Technique

  • Proper placement of the bow on the string at the proper contact point
  • ability to draw a straight bow with an even bow speed
  • establishing the basic arm levels for the right hand
  • Correct positioning of the left hand and fingers
  • Introduction of the basic arm levels for the left hand
  • Rhythm and bowing
  • Detache (legato)
  • Playing rhythms with quarter note, half note, sixteenth note, and eight note values
  • Knowledge of quarter note and half-note rests, bow lifts

Theory

Names of notes through symbols

Introduction of note reading-usually towards the end of the first six-month period

Recognizing basic nomenclature-such as the staff, treble clef sign, basic time signatures, symbols for the down and up bow, symbols for quarter notes and half notes with their corresponding rests

Recital

Simple melodies and folk tunes based on introductory finger patterns

Student encouraged composing melodies based on rhythms and finger patterns learned

 

 

 

Adults

Tone Production
Playing piano and forte dynamics, Preliminary vibrato motions, Demonstrates a proper tone

Rhythm and Bowing
Accents, Hooked bowing, Staccato, Slurs, Scales: F, B flat, E flat

Theory
Explanation of the construction of a scale, recognizing whole and half steps, symbols for dynamics, accents, fermatas and terminology for tempos

Recital
Song selections from Suzuki Book I or song selections based around the students’ preference
